Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX Test Review
Dare I start by saying welcome back to an old favourite?
I have often stated that the Swift is my choice in the affordable hatch segment and I recently awarded the title of MotorMatters choice for a 1st car for a student.
With big shoes to fill, the Swift returned to our driveway in GLX spec. To the younger millennial buyer, this is the default choice in the range because it's the only version that offers Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity. Perhaps it's time for Suzuki SA to look at the spec levels of the GA and GL variants?
All models are powered by the very familiar 1.2L 4 cylinder that delivers 61kW and 113Nm through a slick 5 speed manual transmission. An AMT automatic option is also available.
Light weight is a major part of the Suzuki recipe endowing cars with relatively low power outputs to still provide sprightly performance and good cruising ability. Our traditional road trip was undertaken in the company of a large, luxury and performance SUV yet the Swift had no problem keeping up on the cruise.
GLX spec includes items like the connectivity, touchscreen, reverse camera and auto air conditioning. ESP (electronic stability programme) is now standard across the range adding to the excellent road-holding and handling that the Swift is renowned for providing.
The other Suzuki standard is fuel economy and we averaged 5.3l/100km for the test period. This falls into the excellent category.
The Swift range is currently priced from R184 900 to R222 900 as tested and a 5 year/ 200 000km warranty plus 2 year/ 30 000km service plan are included.
